Overview
Creating a solar water feature for your deck or patio allows you to experience the calming effects of nature while you rest after a long day's work or step outside to enjoy your morning cup of coffee. Even if you live in an urban area, far from the wilds of nature, a gentle fountain or container pond can bring peace and comfort to your deck with its graceful flow of water and lush green plants.
Step 1
Consider the amount of space you have. Even a small deck or balcony can accommodate a solar fountain, while larger decks may be better suited to more elaborate water features. Work with the space you have available to devote to your water feature.
Step 2
Visit home improvement centers to view their selection of solar-powered pumps, fountains and waterfalls. Prices range from under $50 to hundreds of dollars. Which you choose depends on your finances and your available space.
Step 3
Select a system that best meets your needs. Check the length of the wires for the solar panel used to power your fountain. If your deck or patio is in a shady or partially shady area, you will need to mount the panel in an area that receives full sun. Many come with cables that extend to 15 feet or more, allowing you to mount the solar panel at a distance from the water feature.
Step 4
Choose a container for your water feature. You will want a container that complements the style and design of your home. Sealed terracotta pots and basins blend well with virtually any style and look fantastic with lush green foliage. Check that the pump you have chosen is large enough to handle the water flow for the size of the container you are considering. Ask for assistance if you are unsure.
Step 5
Mount the solar panel in an area that receives full sun, following the directions with the kit. Assemble the kit and place the pump in the basin. Fill the container to the appropriate level. Refer to the directions for installing the pump in water.
Step 6
Add decorative plants to the basin, if there is adequate room. Many are designed to hold several water plants. You can purchase water lilies in a variety of colors. Generally lilies are set in pots and submerged. Other water plants are available as bulbs that you simply drop into the pond and let grow naturally. Follow the instructions with the water plants you choose.
Step 7
Place large plants around you water feature with the tallest plants in the back. There are many beautiful tropical plants to choose from that will thrive near a water feature. Be sure to match the lighting requirements for any plants you choose. Place smaller plants in front of the water feature to create a natural appearance.
